If Rocky Raccoon was a mountain biker, and had a gaggle of young coonlets, you can bet a satchel of Black Hills gold he would have ridden the George S. Mickelson Trail wending through the Black Hills of South Dakota. Running 109 miles from Deadwood to Edgemont, the segment is the perfect family moutnain bike trail, following the historic Deadwood to Burlington Northern rail line, which lasted from 1868 until 1983. Now, instead of supporting locomotives the state’s first rails-to-trails project hosts families who get their piston-power from their legs.
