The nation’s trails can tell a feel-good tale from National Trails Day 2008. At the 16th annual celebration of National Trails Day, whose theme for the year is “Join Us on the Trail,” a record 1,112 National Trails Day events registered with American Hiking Society for national sanctioning, with attendance reaching nearly 100,000 trail enthusiasts at registered events across the nation. People of all ages participated in hikes, educational programs, bike rides, volunteer repair projects, festivals, paddle trips, trail dedications and more. |

Hikers hold hands walking, so why shouldn’t organizations who are preserving the trails we walk on? Keystone Resort and Friends of the Dillon Ranger District (FDRD) are dong just that, celebrating National Trails Day by kicking-off a summer program that helps guests save while giving back to the environment. |

Don’t knock Knoxville when it comes to going green. In the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen recently addressed an audience of more than 400 Tennessee tourism professionals during the inaugural Great Smoky Mountains Sustainable Tourism Summit. At stake: sustaining the environment and historical and cultural heritage of the region, while sustaining its economic growth at the same time. |
