Beijing? Who needs it... 

While slalom and sprint paddlers duke it out at the Beijing Olympics in August, their downriver counterparts did so in the lesser-known sport of wildwater racing—perhaps one of paddling’s truest tests of all-around ability-- August 1-3, 2008 on the mountain town of Charlemont, Mass.’s Deerfield River at the USA Wildwater National Championships hosted by the Zoar Outdoor Center.

Bob like a cork on the water, and then pop a cork or two on a bottle of wine afterward, on a new Wine and Whitewater trip being offered this Labor Day on Oregon’s Rogue River.

Rogue Wilderness Adventures, a pioneer in hiking and rafting adventures along Oregon’s historic Rogue, is teaming up with Walla Walla Vintners this Labor Day weekend to host a journey that includes great food, award-winning wine and whitewater rafting.

 Norwalk, Conn., July 26. The event, which benefits five local charities, promises to lure hundreds of paddlers and thousands of spectators.

But even with 54 fourteeners and enough snowfall to appease water needs way out in California, the state is at the forefront of a trend doing just that in the unlikeliest of places: rivers. And resorts like Vail, Steamboat and even Breckenridge are leading the charge.
