Well into the first week of Olympic competition here in Beijing, I’m talking shop with the retired Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler in the Jacuzzi of the Crown Plaza hotel, fresh after a dinner of suspect pickled pork feet. Thankfully, his massive bulk hides the embarrassing—and effervescent—results of my menu choice.

Mountain towns have rivers. And Arizona paddler Tyler Williams has big plans to paddle the four biggest ones in the West from source to sea, exploring western North America's four major arteries from headwater to their final home in the Pacfic. This year’s mission: The Columbia.

At least these athletes will never have to worry about going thirsty.

This spring, Petaluma, Calif.’s CamelBak Products announced it will sponsor a team of freeride mountain bikers for the 2008 season called the Camelbak Originals. Leading the pack: none other than world-renowned mountain bike athlete Kirt Voreis, who has also hand-picked three up-and-coming young riders to join him--Andrew Taylor, Brandon Semenuk and Alex Reveles.

No one needs tell that to Roz Savage, who plans to embark upon an unprecendeted solo journey across the Pacific Ocean in a 24-foot rowboat named the Brocade. She is bidding to be the first woman to ever accomplish this feat.

If anyone can attest to climate change, it’s Ed Viesturs, the first U.S. climber to summit all the world’s 8,000-meter peaks without supplemental Oxygen.

Not resting on his laurels—or his haunches--and to help call attention to the earth’s plight, on April 25, Viesturs and John Stetson embarked on a 150-mile expedition into the Canadian Arctic to raise awareness for climate change.
